(Schott). Originally published in the 1940s, Paul Hindemith's remakable textbooks are still the outstanding works of their kind. In contrast to many musical textbooks written by academic musicians, these were produced by a man who could play every instrument of the orchestra, could compose a satisfying piece for almost every kind of ensemble, and who was one of the most stimulating teachers of his day. It is therefore not surprising that nearly forty years later these books should remain essential reading for the student and the professional musician.

Elementary Training for Musicians 2nd Edition Paul Hindemith 8580000688719 Books Reviews

  • This book is not exactly what I was expecting. It covers a lot of what is taught in ear training courses. There is an emphasis on rhythm throughout the chapters. This book goes through various meters, and includes exercises to play on the piano, tap and sing. The exercises that involve two different rhythms at the same time seem to help pianists the most, although it helps any musician multitask. I was pleased with the inclusion of slower tempo rhythms using up to 64th notes. While it is not as common to see meters such as 4/8, when slow passages do appear with the 8th note as the beat, it can be difficult without practice.

The pacing seems fairly fast. Hindemith assumes the reader has almost no experience. Chapter 1 includes exercises for those who do not even read music, and introduces quarter notes and half notes. Vocal exercises include high, medium and low tones in place of a staff, in the event the reader does not read music. The difficulty progresses throughout while introducing the rest of the notes and various meters. The different clefs are introduced treble, bass, tenor, alto.

To be honest, I do not know the target audience of this book. The beginning material is very easy for anyone who has played an instrument, while some of the exercises go into details that most people would not need to know.
  • Hindemith is the man when it comes to music. I love the first chapter where he does that simple rhythmic explanation. This will help develop good musicianship skills, and is a good book for practice. Get this and the Melodia book to practice sight singing, and that intro level college sight singing course will be a joke! Of course, books don't make you better, practice does. Remember that always.
  • This was a gift. I hope he likes it. It's a good resource for beginning musicianship classes. We used it at Valley College in Van Nuys, California, in the late 70's maybe early 80's (with Prof. David Carroll).
  • A book that I will continue to bring with me wherever I may call home. A well-paced introduction to training musical ability, dexterity, and theory understanding.
  • It may seem a bit too serious, but Hindemith is the real deal, this is German engineering applied to music education.
  • After a great private music teacher, this is the most helpful aide to self improvement. It rewards a thorough, relentless, learner with progressively more difficult exercises and is structured to allow each person their individual foibles. Some pages take minutes, others, months. And my teacher appreciates it, too, says it is commonly used in music pedagogy degree programs and musical performance degree programs.
  • Published the same year as my birth 1949. The new version, which my teacher has, had a mistake that this older version did NOT have.

Bad part is the musty smell of the book --- needs even more airing.
  • This book is absolutely wonderful. Challenging. Hard to do. Worth every second of practice you can devote to it.
