A powerful and insightful historical expose of ultra-right politics in Australian during the Second World War, this book exposes the people behind the Sydney’s Publicist newspaper. Th is thought-provoking work deconstructs the inner workings of a political group and considers how the ideologies of a collective of quasiintellectuals transformed from a nationalistic, anti-British movement, simply advocating an Australian society free of Imperial rule, to eventually descend into a right-wing, anti- Semitic assembly of Nazi and Japanese sympathizers. Th is book considers the roots of right-wing political organisations that still prosper in our country and how one such organisation led both the intelligent and the unstable astray. Far from presenting a dry academic work, the author succeeds in humanising the people involved, with all their faults and foibles, and shows what a immense impact the White Australia Policy had, and still has, in shaping the beliefs of everyday Australians.

"A surprising account of the influence that neo [and perhaps real] fascism had in Australia in the period before WWII, followed by the detention of its followers. Significant people who were prepared to collaborate with an invading Japanese army! Anti-Semitic, anti-Britain and completely misguided.
Well researched, and discusses the limits of freedom of speech."

- Ms. Winter's book is a well-balanced consideration of a group of people who didn't realize the consequences of their beliefs and many of whom suffered as a result. Many of the persons described by Ms. Winter are precisely the kind of well-meaning rightists without much gray matter who flourished in the United States before World War II. While I regret the imprisonment of many of these people as being completely unjustified, it is still understandable in the context of the time.
