The War A Concise History 19391945 Louis L Eric Sevareid Foreword Snyder Books Reviews
- During my senior year at Wofford College, I purchased THE WAR A CONCISE HISTORY, 1939-1945. Besides the textbook for my history class - Western European History, 1919 to the Present, Snyder's book was to be used as a supplementary paperback for additional reading. This class, taught by Dr. Ross Bayard had a tremendous impact on me for my teaching career. This book was extremely interesting, especially in the areas of the political machinations which were running rampant during this era with an assortment of dictators hell bent on conquering, and subjugating millions. Also, the book brings to bear the economic quest for the raw materials of iron ores, scrap metals, oil supplies, rubber and food products which would be needed by these gigantic war machines. Then, one is introduced to the military areas of the text, the strategy and tactics which were brought to bear as the world was introduced to new forms of warfare. Snyder's book added the importance of key figures, both political and military preparations and the implications of the key battles fought on land, on the seas (oceans) and in the skies over the Pacific, and over Europe, and North Africa.
After finishing my military service with the U.S Navy and graduating from Wofford College I can honestly say that this is one book I kept close at hand in my teaching career. For the next forty-plus years, I have used that paperback book THE WAR A CONCISE HISTORY, 1939-1945 in all my history classes when this era of history was to be covered. It was covered, especially in my "Modern Warfare" class at Spartanburg High School.
Even though I have retired from teaching at Spartanburg High School, I continue to teach at Spartanburg Community College. So the legacy of using Snyder's book continues in my Western Civilization class. My students are going to be taught the causes and effects of what happened during those tumultuous years in the right way. None of that PC stuff that some like to pass off as history today.
After all these years the paperback is beginning to fall apart. Therefore, in order to keep this area of history being covered in my college classes I ordered the hardbound copy. I'm very pleased that it arrived in an orderly fashion, as well as being in good shape. Thank you, B.L. - REALLY A GREAT BOOK ABOUT WWII. IT COVERS FROM BEGINNING TO END ALL THE IMPORTANT EVENTS IN WWII
- Many thanks. This is an old book but it is very fine and I got it just after my order.
- This is one of the best histories of WWII I have ever read.
Snyder's writing is interesting while remaining intelligent, anlaytical and factual. If you think history books are boring and unengaging try reading Snyder. He brings the era to life and makes the reader engage in what is can otherwise be dry history. Snyder's critcism of the west for allowing the Hitler to develop as well as his look at the megalomania and the evil of the third reich are classic. - This is one of the most indepth books on World War II! BUy it
