- Having used the CSB app for the last three months I can say that this translation is terrific! I am delighted to now own a copy of the CSB study bible. The CSB uses a translation philosophy of “Optimal Equivalenceâ€. The translation team sought a balance between word-for-word and thought for thought. Comparing this CSB next to the NIV and the ESV, one immediately discovers a translation with a crisp focus that brings out the meaning of the text while at the same time improving readability. It is simply a better translation.
The text-block of the Scriptures is clear and easy on the eyes. An added benefit is the type is “line-matched†– the printing on the front and back of a page are lined up to match. (Surprising for a bible at this price point!) Because of this there is less “shadowing†making the text easier to read - it just looks cleaner. On the other hand, like many study bible’s, the notes can seem like a wall of text and the pictures, maps, etc. demonstrate “shadowing†on the reverse page. The study notes bring out facts and ideas that will cause you to think about things in new and unique ways. It should be noted that the study notes are identical to the notes found in other Holman study bibles.
The materials used in the construction of the bible are very nice for the price. However, there are some things that are worth noting. The leather on the bible is labeled as being goatskin, although that is not mentioned in the listing. The pages of the bible are “giltedâ€, but it is too heavily /poorly applied. As a result, the pages of the bible were stuck together. It took two hours to separate the 2146 pages so the pages were immediately accessible. The yapp is ok, but could be just a little bit wider all the way around. There are two ribbons incorporated into the bible – one black, one red. They are just ok – they would be more useful if they were wider and thicker. It would also be nice to have a third or fourth.
Overall this is a nice bible rendition and is good value for money!
Should you order this bible, I would recommend that you check it over carefully upon receipt. The first copy I received had a number of pages that were not cut correctly, the spine was separating at the top and one of the edges of the bible had a glue smear. It clearly should have never left the factory as a first quality bible. Unfortunately, the bible is printed and produced in China.
Holman should consider producing the CSB translation through Royal Jongbloed for their upper-end bibles. - First, the bad. The bible I received wasn't new (already dedicated) but the seller immediately sent a new replacement. The bible didn't look used and I only discovered it when I gave it to my husband to dedicate to me.
Then, the good. This bible is gorgeous. The leather is very nice and I absolutely adore the cut tabbing of the books. My older KJV's were nicely tabbed and I was spoiled since newer versions seem to skip this detail. I don't like sticking tabs in myself because I never get the 100% straight. The pages are thin but absolutely no thinner than my other bibles.
Next project is to find a nice cover since it's an XL size bible. This was a great Christmas gift from my Hubby. - First off, I bought the Holman Study Bible CSB translation, to try out the translation and Holman Study Bible aspect for their insight. I am not a novice Bible student (+20 yrs) but I'm no expert. The quality of the Bible, materialistic wise is the best I have seen anywhere, leather cover quality superb, strong binding, paper quality thicker than usual bible quality but still thin, print quality is first class, as as materialistic book you could not wish for better quality. The delivery by DHL was super fast even though I live in SE Asia. So, the product is first class. The study information is very good. The maps are very good, IMHO.
One last thing. Whatever translation of study bible you want, buy a Holman Study Bible. The information and quality is first class. I personally have Kjv and CSB versions of this Bible
I purchased this Bible with my own money, so no bias on my part. I have 17 different Bibles in my collection to date, of which come from different manuscript translations. But this is the one I am most surprised by, for quality of translation, I will admit it took some praying, thinking and cross referencing to confirm some of the translations, but they make sound sense. I say this due to the CSB haters on the internt. Enough said.
God Bless. - This review is based solely on the quality of the product I recieved. I love the CSB translation and Holman did an excellent job with this study bible. But unfortunately there are some minor quality defects. Some tabs have been placed crooked. The pages weren't cut properly to wrap around tabs as shown in pictures, and the leather bible came with a small knick on the front cover. It's fine, but I would have expected a little better for the 70 price.
- Not genuine leather but even better its goatskin.
