Southern University and A&M College is the Soul Mother of the Black middle class in Louisiana and the Jaguar Nation. From its humble beginnings (1880) in New Orleans as a higher education institution for "persons of color", she has provided shelter and inspiration for 134 years. Southern University has been a world leader in the development of outstanding scholars, military ofï¬cers, and sportsmen. The notable leaders highlighted include P. B. S. Pinchback, J. S. Clark, F.G. Clark, Dolores Spikes, LTG Russel Honore' and sports legends A.W. Mumford, Mel Blount, Aeneas Williams, Avery Johnson, Lou Brock, and Rickie Weeks. In 1948, A.W. Mumford's undefeated Jaguars dominated the San Francisco State Beavers with a 30-0 victory in the ï¬rst historical interracial bowl game, which established credibility for Black college football. The "S" on our chest symbolizes our Southern pride. This book provides the history where "The Heart of the Jaguar" begins!

- This book is everything! What a great depiction of the historical aspects of Southern University! It does not cover much about Southern University of New Orleans or Southern University of Shreveport as individual institutions, but it does cover how they came about. With the great information that this book has concerning Southern University, its history, its triumphs, and its legacy, I believe this should be the book that every Southern University student should read, hands down.
- What a find! What a treasure! Such a thorough history! I bought five copies more gifts and my personal library.
- Dr. Gibson writes a compelling historical summary of one of the greatest HBCU's in America, Southern A & M University. There are very few HBCU institutional histories that captures the breath and scope of black college football as illustrated in "A Portrait of Southern University".
