"The novel begins with a young woman telling a police officer she overheard two men planning a murder. She had been drinking heavily and after she is sober she denies her story. I am only at an intermediate level in French yet I had little trouble understanding this novel. Of course, I did have a good dictionary and learned words I would never have seen in a textbook. The story is far more interesting than the previous Maigret novel I read, L'Aime de Madame Maigret. More than half of the novel is in dialog which has simpler French words than the narrative. Because I am not fluent in French I can't comment on the literary quality of the novel, only whether it kept my interest and if it helped improve my language skills."
